Station 4-9 dispatched to 3 calls in 26 minutes on a snowy afternoon.

During the afternoon of Saturday, December 6, a light snow began to fall over Lancaster County making travel hazardous on the roads. \

At 4:42 PM, Station 4-9 was dispatched to the 5100 block of Primrose Lane in Salisbury Township for the chimney fire. Deputy 4-9 (Beyer), arrived on the scene in less than a minute, and reported flames coming from the chimney. Engines 4-9-1 and 4-9-2 responded.\

As the 4-9 units were responding to the chimney fire, at 4:50PM, the Gap Fire Company (Station 4-2), along with mutual aid companies were dispatched to the 700 block of Salisbury Township for the dwelling fire. Deputy 4-9 advised Lancaster County 911 that both 4-9 Engines could handle the chimney fire, and to divert Tanker 4-9 to the Mount Vernon Road fire at 4:51 PM. The chimney fire was under control in minutes, and the engines cleared the scene, and returned to station at 5PM. Upon clearing the scene, Engine 4-9-1 was directed by Lancaster County 911 at 5:06 to standby at Station 4-9 to cover Station 4-2’s area.\

Upon response of Chief 4-2 (Kurtz) to the Mount Vernon Road fire, Lancaster County 911 advised that the reporting party stated that the neighboring house “exploded”. A firefighter from Station 4-2 arrived on the scene with a house fully involved. Chief Kurtz then requested the second alarm Tankers be dispatched to the scene. Once the fire was knocked down several of the Tankers that were enroute or arriving were returned. Tanker 4-9 cleared the scene at 5:17 PM, Ambulance 4-9 cleared the scene at 9:49 PM, and Station 4-9 Fire Police cleared at 10:02 PM. The final fire units also cleared at 10:02 PM.\

Unfortunately, one person lost their life in the fire. A firefighter from Christiana was injured in a fall and was transported by Lancaster EMS to a local hospital for treatment. \

The following Fire Companies were dispatched to the scene: Gap, Christiana, Atglen, White Horse, Kinzer, Paradise – Leaman Place, Gordonville, Intercourse, Bart Township, New Holland, Cochranville, and Westwood.\

The following EMS Companies were dispatched to the scene: White Horse, Parkesburg, Pomeroy, Gordonville, Lancaster EMS, Ephrata Hospital Paramedics.\

The following agencies also assisted at the scene: Lancaster County Coroners Office, Pennsylvania State Police, Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshalls, Salisbury Township Streets Department, LPH Plumbing and Heating, PPL Electric.\

The cause of the fire is under investigation.\
