Garage fire on Wertztown Road

At 12:35pm on Sunday, February 10th, Station 4-9, along with units from the Honey Brook (33), Caernarvon-Churchtown (3-4), Intercourse (4-4) and Liberty-New Holland (3-9) fire companies were dispatched to the 6000 block of Wertztown Road in Salisbury Township for a reported garage fire.\
\
Responding units were advised by Lancaster County 911 that the reporting party advised of a fire extending from the wood stove chimney pipe to the garage structure itself. Arriving on location, with visible fire on the “A/D” corner of the roof, and being advised by a resident of possible extension into the side “D” wall and roof, Safety 4-9 (Eno) advised a working fire. Working hand in hand, residents and neighbors then established a bucket brigade from the residence to the garage, keeping the flames in check, eventually knocking the fire down. \
\
First arriving fire apparatus Engine 33-5 from Honey Brook was advised to deploy one handline and hand tools to overhaul the structure. Fortunately, the bucket brigade worked, and the fire was kept to the area of origin. Deputy 4-9 (Beyer) had the command; Chief 4-9-2 (Petershiem) had the operations.\
\
All responding units with the exception of Engine 33-5 & Station 4-9 were canceled. After some additional overhaul, and checking the structure, Station 4-9 and Engine 33-5 cleared the scene at 12:58.\
\
Station 4-9 Fire Police detoured traffic around the scene, closing Wertztown Road between Mount Zion Road and Elwood Street. \
