Water Cistern filling detail

On the evening of Monday, July 16, crews gathered at the station to top off two cisterns in White Horse. One cistern is located at the fire station, and the other is located along Route 340 at the Stoltzfus farm. \
\
The cisterns are both filled by rain water from the rainspouts of the fire station and the Stoltzfus barns, respectively. The cistern at the fire station holds approximately 10,000 gallons of water, while the Stoltzfus cistern holds 60,000 gallons of water. In the event of a major fire, these cisterns can be utilized to fill Tanker trucks to shuttle water quickly to a fire while a more stable water supply source can be set up. The cisterns are also used to refill our trucks when we have a smaller fires such as car, trash, or brush fires. With the recent dry spell, the water level in the tanks were not up to par, and needed to be topped off so they could be as full as possible in the event of an emergency.\

Engine 4-9-2 set up a fill site at the creek on Buena Vista Road, just west of Route 897, while Tanker 4-9 would dump its load of water, then proceed to the fill site to be refilled, then cycle between the cisterns and the fill site.\
