Fire Company participates in annual Zone 4 Firemen’s Competition

On Wednesday, May 7th, 8 members loaded up in Engine 4-9-1 and headed to the annual Zone 4 Firemen’s Competition in Bird-In-Hand.\
\
The annual event, which has been held on the grounds behind the Bird-In-Hand Family Restaurant and Motor Inn for the past several years, (before that it was held at Pequea Valley High School for a couple of years and before that, at Paradise Township Community Park) is held as a friendly competition and a social get-together between the member Zone 4 fire companies which include the following companies: Bird-In-Hand, Gap, Gordonville, Intercourse, Kinzer, Paradise, Ronks, White Horse, and Witmer.\
\
This year’s competition involved a simulated water rescue in the pond on the grounds of the Motor Inn. Four people were assigned to the boat as rescuers. The other two were assigned as safety men. The boat crew rowed out to the “victim” in the middle of the pond. Once out at the victim, they discover that the victim is too large to fit on the boat with the four rescuers, thus putting the boat over weight limit. One rescuer got out of the boat and into the water to help with loading the “victim” in the boat. Once the “victim” was in the boat the remaining 3 rescuers rowed back to the dock. The rescuer that was left in the water was then pulled to shore by the two safety men using rope bags. Time was completed when all 6 rescuers and the “victim” were safely across the finish line.\
\
When it was all said and done, the Bird-In-Hand Fire Company was declared the overall winners. Gordonville placed second, with White Horse placing third. White Horse completed the drill in 4 minutes and 18 seconds. A good time was had by all in attendance.\
\
There were also apparatus on display from Zone 4 and other area fire companies for everyone to look at.\
\
Our Ladies Auxiliary was also in attendance with their food trailer, providing food and drink to the firefighters and public. Thank you to the ladies for providing this service!\
