Mass Casualty accident in Leacock Township

At 7:04PM on Saturday, March 29, Ambulance 4-9 was dispatched to assist the Intercourse Fire Company (Station 4-4) in the 4100 block of Old Philadelphia Pike in Leacock Township on a vehicle accident with entrapment.\

Units were advised by Lancaster County 911 of two pickup trucks that had collided. Six persons were reported entrapped, with one person ejected from the vehicle.\

At 7:14, Engine 4-9-1 and Squad 4-9 were dispatched to assist. Engine 4-9-1 was ordered to set up a landing zone on the east side of the accident scene for the incoming medical helicopters, while Squad 4-9 was ordered to handle traffic control duties at Route 340 and Lesal Road along with Station 4-9 Fire Police.\

Crews from multiple Fire & EMS agencies worked hand in hand for 45 minutes to extricate and treat the injured. All injured were either flown or taken by ambulance to two local trauma centers. Unfortunately, as of this writing (4/6/09), four of the injured succumbed to their injuries. Our thoughts are with the families of the deceased and injured persons.\

The final units cleared the scene at 10:57PM. The incident is under investigation by the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office and Pennsylvania State Police.\

Medic 93-3 (Brandywine) and Ambulance 33-1 (Honey Brook) transferred to Station 4-9 to stand by since the area was stripped of EMS units.\
