Hay Wagon catches fire on Mount Vernon Road

At 1:58 PM on Wednesday, July 2, Station 4-9 was dispatched to the intersection of Mount Vernon and Cains Road in Salisbury Township for a trash fire. Deputy 4-9 (J. Beyer) and Engine 4-9-1 both responded soon after dispatch and were advised by Lancaster County 911 of a hay wagon that was on fire at the intersection, and that it was disconnected from the truck that was towing it. Engine 4-9-2 and Tanker 4-9 both responded shortly afterward.\

Deputy Beyer arrived on the scene with a hay wagon involved in fire and established the Command. Engine 4-9-1 arrived on the scene and deployed three handlines and began to extinguish the flames. The heat from the fire melted plastic from utility lines that were over the wagon. Frontier Communications and Comcast Cable were notified of the situation. Engine 4-9-2 and Tanker 4-9 arrived on the scene and supplied water to Engine 4-9-1.\
\
Tanker 4-4 (Intercourse) was dispatched to respond with additional water. Engine 4-9-2 responded to the Stoltzfus Farm in White Horse to establish a fill site for the Tankers. As the main body of fire was extinguished, the process of offloading the wagon full of smoldering straw bales began. Neighboring farms brought equipment to the scene to assist in the task. As the straw was off loaded into the road, it was hosed down and then loaded into a manure spreader to be removed to a neighboring farm.\
\
Fire Police from Stations 4-9 & 4-4 closed Mount Vernon Road between Cains and Limeville Roads for the duration of the incident. The final 4-9 units cleared the scene at 3:45PM.\
