Cat in a tree? Nope…Cows in a pit….

At 10:58AM on Saturday March 13, after receiving a request for assistance by telephone by a local farmer, Engine 4-9-1 advised Lancaster County 911 that they were enroute to a farm in the 100 block of Blank Road in Salisbury Township. The farmer had stated that he had some cows that had fallen into an underground manure storage pit. Prior to the the arrival of the fire department, the farmer had removed one cow, leaving three to be rescued. Manure was pumped from the pit to make rescue possible.\
\
Engine 4-9-2 responded at 11:31 for additional equipment. A telescopic forklift boom was brought to the scene, and the cows were herded by a crew wearing airpacks to an area in the pit where the could have ropes and chains wrapped to lift them from the pit. Once they were lifted from the pit, the cows were hosed off using Engine 4-9-2’s booster line. All of the cows survived their ordeal.\
\
After the last cow was removed from the pit, a quick cleanup of equipment was done to get the Engines back in service. \

Engines 4-9-1 & 4-9-2 cleared the scene at 1:16PM and returned to station to finish the large task of cleanup.
