4 call Saturday keeps the Volunteers busy

Saturday May 12 proved to be an unusually busy day for Station 4-9. We had 4 fire calls; 3 of which were back-to-back-to back.\

At 10:12 AM, Tanker 4-9 was dispatched on the second alarm to assist the Intercourse Fire Co. on a working barn fire on Clearview Road in Leacock Township, just west of the village of Intercourse. A motor malfunctioned inside the cow stable, and rapidly spread to the structure. Fortunately, the owner had placed a fire wall between the cow stable and the main barn, saving the main barn from major damage. Tanker 4-9 fell into the Tanker Shuttle, which was filling up at sites at Pond Road & Route 340, Old Leacock Road at the Coleman Center, and at the Gordonville Fire Station. Tanker 4-9 was released from the scene at 12:53 PM.\

At 10:35 AM, Engine 4-9-1 was assigned for a standby transfer to the Intercourse Fire Station to cover any additional calls for Intercourse while they were committed at the barn fire. Fortunately, there were none. Hose 3-9 from the Liberty Fire Co. of New Holland was cancelled from their response to the barn fire, and placed on standby at Station 4-4. Tanker 3-4 from the Caernarvon Fire Co. was also dispatched to provide the area with additional coverage, since most of the local tankers were at the barn fire. Hose 3-9 and Tanker 3-4 were released by Command 4-4 at 11:12 AM, since they had the barn fire under control, leaving only Engine 4-9-1 at Station 4-4.\

At 2:03 PM, Engine 4-9-2 & Ambulance 4-9, along with Medic 9 from Ephrata Community Hospital and the Pennsylvania State Police, were dispatched to a vehicle accident at Cambridge and Jacobs Roads in Salisbury Township. At 2:04, Engine 4-9-1 was released from the standby transfer by Command 4-4 so that they could respond to the accident. There were apparatus at the barn fire that could handle any other calls for Intercourse. Engine 4-9-2 responded at 2:04 and Ambulance 4-9 responded at 2:07. Deputy 4-9 (Beyer) arrived on the scene with a Chevrolet Suburban on its side, blocking traffic. He determined that Engine 4-9-1 was not needed, and Engine 1 returned to Station 4-9 at 2:11. Engine 2 arrived at 2:11, and controlled hazards on the overturned vehicle. Ambulance 4-9 arrived at 2:17 and began to care for the people that were in the Suburban. Medic 9 and the State Police arrived shortly afterward. Fortunately, there were no major injuries, and the patients declined any care by EMS, and both returned to station shortly afterward. Engine 4-9-2 cleared the scene at 3:05 PM. \

Tanker 4-9 arrived on the scene at 5:53, and was released at 5:57 by Command 4-2, as they were not needed at the scene. Station 4-2 would clear the scene at 6:22.\
